SOAR for Justice is dedicated to helping survivors of abuse rise for justice. Its founder and director, Dovie Yoana King, is a California native and devoted public interest lawyer with two decades of legal experience. Sadly, her marriage was abusive and she endured escalating emotional, physical, verbal, psychological and financial abuse, among other forms of coercive control. While this chapter in her life was truly devastating, Dovie gradually overcame fear and isolation by reaching out for help at the Family Justice Center, an organization that provides free services for abused women and their children. In doing so, Dovie gained support to escape the abuse, obtain a restraining order and navigate a "high conflict" divorce and custody case in family court. While Dovie successfully obtained sole legal and physical custody of her child, she understands that many abused women do not fare so well in the family courts and law reform is necessary to achieve systemic change.

An important part of Dovie's healing and recovery was her decision to provide pro bono legal services to low-income women and Spanish-speaking immigrants at a domestic violence restraining order clinic at the South Bay Courthouse near the U.S.-Mexico border. She drew from her personal life and family court experience to better serve the needs of survivors seeking legal help. In 2017, Dovie was recognized for her clinic work by being presented with the Outstanding Service Award by the Legal Aid Society of San Diego. She also received the prestigious Wiley W. Manuel Certificate for Pro Bono Legal Services by the State Bar of California for two consecutive years in 2016 and 2017, which honors the memory of California's first African-American Supreme Court Justice.

Currently, Dovie resides in Boston with her child and works at Harvard Law School's Office of Public Interest Advising. She is a member of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, San Diego Domestic Violence Council, Women's Bar Association in Boston, San Diego County Bar Association and Lawyers Club of San Diego. Dovie is dedicated to advancing the rights of survivors, raising awareness about domestic violence and promoting family court justice. She has made it her mission to educate the community and mentor other women who have left abusive relationships, publish articles about her personal experience and speak on legal panels.

By establishing SOAR for Justice, Dovie endeavors to work with lawyers, court personnel, educators, community-based organizations, advocates, legislators and law enforcement to give survivors a stronger voice for change.
